Dolce & Gabbana: Brand History
Dolce & Gabbana is a world-famous fashion house which was founded in 1985 in Legnano, Italy by the Italian fashion designers, Domenico Dolce (born on 13thSeptember 1958, in Polizzi Generosa, Italy) and Stefano Gabbana (born on 14thNovember 1962, in Milan, Italy).
Brand History:
After working as assistant designers at an atelier in Milan, the two later founded the Dolce and Gabbana label. They debuted in 1985 with their first runway show at the New Talent fashion show in Milan. The “Real Women” was their first collection that was produced in 1986. Because they did not have enough money to hire models for the show, they instead had their friends to help. This was one of the reasons behind “Real Women”. They had many other firsts including: first store in 1986, launching their knitwear line in 1987, producing their ready-to-wear line during the beginning of 1988 (in Domenico Dolce’s family-owned atelier, located in Legnano, Milan), launching their beachwear and lingerie lines and opening their first boutique in Japan in 1989 and introducing their first men’s collection in 1990 as well as opening their first women’s boutique in the same year in Milan.
The label created their first women’s collection fragrance launched in 1992 which received the Perfume Academy’s 1993 award. Two years after they came out with their first men’s fragrance which had claimed one more award from this Academy. In 1994, they introduced the D&G label that was inspired by street style and a more youthful look. In 1995, the brand published the their first book called “10 Years of Dolce and Gabbana” and just about ten years later, in 2004, they opened their first stand alone store on Bond Street in London, England. In 1999, their collection for children known as D&G Junior was created and presented at thee children's fashion show, Pitti Bimbo in Florence.
Collaborating with Artists: Dolce & Gabbana have designed costumes for many music artists and their tours such as BeyoncĂ©, Madonna and Missy Elliot. Famous companies and people have collaborated with Dolce & Gabbana to produce unique products or lines. The brand’s creations are known to often be trend-setting. Everything new they try is a success. For Madonna’s world tour, ‘The Girlie Show’ in 1993, there were around 1,500 costumes created by Dolce and Gabbana. They even designed for Madonna’s ‘Music’ album by dressing her and her entire ensemble as well as creating a backdrop for the tour. In 2004, Dolce and Gabbana designed the uniforms for A.C Milan and have partnered with Kylie Minogue to design for her ‘Aphrodite: Les Folies Tour’ in 2011.
